It seems a long time since we were at Strasbourg. We left this city at 10 o’clock and immediately entered Germany. The mornings run of 50 miles was without interest but after Miltagessen we entered the wonderful Hollental through which we travelled two years ago by train. The journey by road exceeded my expectations as regards scenery; it is really magnificent and is well worth a special effort to see it. The Black Forest impresses me more than ever on the third visit. For beauty of scenery and colour and the wonderful profuseness of trees and the intense greenness of the hillsides I have seen nothing to approach this district. Tonight we sleep at the Gasthaus zum Ocksen in Todtnau having passed through Freibourg, Titisee and Barental. In the course of the evening we drank Zeller wine while around us there was much merrymaking over some feast celebrating the 40th anniversary of what, as far as I could make out, was a great forest fire.
We have done a poor milage again today having covered only about (blank distance) to Schaffhausen. From Todtnau we came through to St Blasien, beautiful forest scenery all the way. From St Blasien the Black Forest scenery gradually faded into the typical scenery of northern Switzerland. At Schaffhausen we revisited the Rheinfalls, a wonderful sight in the brilliant sunlight. The water is churned into a gleaming white as it pours over the rocky fall. In Schaffhausen we called on Mme Eisenhut who remembered us and later in the afternoon met Miss Harris with whom we spent the rest of the evening. After having tea we went to Ebnat where there is a fine woodland cemetery of which there are only three in Europe. The graves are set in groups in the midst of beautiful woods and are planted with lovely flowers. There is a beautiful air of restfulness and peace about this place and no feeling of depression which an ordinary cemetery gives. Walking back from here after dusk I saw my first glowworm shining a lovely green light. All this time the bikes had been left outside the station with no lights and it was not until about 10 o’clock that we returned to collect them. Tonight we sleep at the “Schwanen”.
